    HELP!!! (1911 build)

So I have a TM frame on which I just finished cutting the barrel seat etc.

When I went to test the recoil system / slide stop, occasionally I would have the gun not go all the way back into battery if I accompanied the slide forward...

What causes this, how do I fix it, and is it really that important?

Why would you accompany the slide forward?
If you can't explain it simply you don't understand it well enough. Albert Einstein

For the express reason of seeing if there were any hangups.

Do you have the barrel link in place? Very hard to tell but it looks like you barrel hood is hitting the breach face above the extractor.

yeah, I'm using a .273 barrel link. I have clearance on the extractor side, but I haven't checked the other side...

Is it hanging on the disconector? at what point does it hang? when you rack it does it fully go into battery? if it does go into battery follow these steps
            1. finish installing the dryer
            2. finish the pistol
            3. go to range and shoot the piss out of it.

Any special reason why you are using a #2 link instead of the standard #3.
Try putting the barrel into the slide by itself without it being on the gun. Does it fit? Also when you force the slide into battery by hand does the safety line up with the safety slot on the slide? If not you need to change links. Also check to see if there are any scuff or scratch marks on the top of the barrel that are restricting the movement. Is your barrel seat low enough? And that's the reason you are using a #2 link..

I've noticed that people lapping the slide not enough for the full rearward position will cause a little binding annd slow the slide enough to make it unable to fully chamber the next round...

On mine once the slide moved freely and cleanly, it didn't need to be "thumbed" into the last 1/8-1/4" of slide movement.

But there are many things that can keep the slide from fully closing.... I believe the kanhaussen book will help you properly diagnose this yourself.

I figured it out, the left side of the barrel hood was bumping the slide. When I tested it with just the barrel in the slide, it fit because there was clearance on the right side, but it was so slight that I didn't notice the barrel tilt to the side.

My barrel seat is only about a thousandth shallower than spec.

                  Thank you all!

550 give or take, but the satisfaction I got of doing it myself was priceless.

yes , priceless. did you buy the drill set and the jig?
did you use mill or drill press. Doing my research i want to do one.
By the way congratulation that's a nice looking project.

I bought the jig from TM, but used my own bits. I've had a set of cobalt bits for years.

I used a DeWalt hand drill, and a dremel router table to finish. Oh and files and a ton of lapping compound.

Thanks. So far function tests with snap caps have yielded good results.

I'm just hoping it shoots all right. I should be able to get out to the range next week sometime, so I'll update after that.

How long did it take you to machine the frame?
did you take pictures ? as I would like to see how it was done ..

Machining the frame took about an hour and a half on my Dremel router table... Then it took me 3 days to get it lapped right (admittedly I only had 800 grit compound)

I did not take pictures of the actual machining process. I do have some pictures of the pieces I had to fit though.
