Sig p6/225 decocker non-functioning: Suggestions for fixes?

Besides visiting a gunsmith, what should I look for if a Sig P6/255 decocker is non functioning.

It will not drop the hammer.

Is this possibly a simple fix?

I've had to tighten the plastic grips as they would loosen with use, but I have not changed grips.

What would changing the grips have to do with it?

The grips hold the decocking lever and spring in place. If it has moved out of proper alignment with the grips off, or if replacment grips are not properly relieved in that area it could cause problems. Downlowd the Sig P2XX manual and check the parts layout with yours. You will have to remove the grips to see how the decocking lever and spring are installed. It is a pretty simple system.
