good drill bits?

If you just need a basic set of standard sizes, DeWalt has a decent set of cobalt tipped bits. I want to say I paid $40ish for the kit. That will drill most non-hardend steel. For hardend steel, I use carbide bits. They're not cheap, so I only have a few of them, but will cut through hardend steel where the cobalt bits barely made a dimple."If a man hasn't found something worth dying for, he isn't fit to live." - Martin Luther King Jr.
"Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." - Benjamin Franklin

I bought a big box of fractional drill bits from Costco a couple of months ago for $29.99, they are coated with titanium nitride.
I figured they would break very easily but didn't care because there are several of each size in the box, so far I haven't been able to break any of them and I've used them on both aluminum and steel.Comment

I get mine at the local industrial supply. High Speed Steel, and Cobalt as necessary. I am a retired mechanic, so I have a real nice sharpener to keep them in good shape. The secret to long bit life is the right speed, and a good lube.sigpic

good and affordable???
I have a set in the garage that is letters numbers and fractions it was $200 25 years ago I've replaced them as needed and keep spares on hand when they do break. I also have a set of letters in screw machine length and a spare set of numbers. I also have a bunch of aircraft length drills and extremely small ones #70's 75's and 80's used for drilling holes in vacuum form molds
What ever you do buy American and pay good money for them. I do not buy drill bits from the box stores. I order them online from places that I know sell the American made good stuff.
But the key is learning how to sharpen them by hand on a snag grinder, a sharp Chinese bit will work better then a dull american one will.Comment

GOOD drill bits ARE affordable.
They are not CHEAP, but they are certainly affordable.
My main set is the standard 115pc chicago latrobe high speed uncoated set.
I picked it up off ebay 15 years ago for $120.
Like everyone else, I have replaced the ones I broke and picked up extras as needed.
Good drill bits are only a few dollars a piece.
I solved the problem of wearing them out by buying a drill bit sharpener.Randall Rausch

I wasn't trying to say that the two were different. I meant basically how could you afford to not have good bits?GOOD drill bits ARE affordable.

This times 10,000.
Don't buy junk, learn how to run them properly, and learn to sharpen them.
I am using drill bits from a used jobber index I bought over 35 years ago. Made in USA, and still going strong. Replace a few of the itty bitty ones now and then, but replace them with good stuff. Cheap in the long run.Last edited by kendog4570; 09-26-2014, 6:12 PM.Comment
