When requesting custom serial numbers my thinking is to get matching numbers to the ones stamped on the front trunion, bolt etc. but I'm wondering if it would be best to keep it down to the five numbers or include the year and two letters before the five numbers. Any thoughts on this?

I'd keep the letters but not the year.I hate people that are full of hate.

Thanks Thedrickel and Jeffm, I got my order in without the years. Now the waiting... I made use of the suggestions previously given to me by you guys and read all the material I could find. Now I've got some kits and know which ones to keep an eye out for in the future as availability decreases and prices increase. Just looking for the stuff I want is a big part of the fun to me. The good news is most of the money I spend on this hobby can be considered an investment if I buy wisely. Then again life is short, so sometimes I just bite the bullet and pay a premium for what I really want. I've gotten started making monetary contributions to Calguns so that if we lose more of our rights in CA I will know I didn't just sit on the sidelines and do nothing. If you can't explain it simply you don't understand it well enough.
