Staking Plunger Tube ?

Need to stake on a new tube.
Any easy way to do it without a staking tool ?

I made my own tool too.

I've thought about staking the plunger tube this way:


Put a drill bit/piece of wire inside of the plunger tube of a diameter that equals the diameter of the plunger tube and place shims along its top and bottom until they equal the distance that the plunger tube protrudes from the frame.

Get a tiny metal ball that will flare the plungers tube's hollow posts.

Use a piece of sheet metal/penny between the plier's jaw and outer surface of the plunger tube and shims to prevent marring the plunger tube.

Use the pliers to squeeze the ball to flare the posts.

As the pliers squeeze the ball into the posts and flare them the pliers cannot deform the plunger tube because of the drill bit/wire inside it and the protective shims along its top and bottom.

I have never staked a plunger tube this way but I think my improvised method would work in a pinch.


MAKE SURE YOU STAKE THE PLUNGER TUBE WITH ITS FRONT HOLE AND REAR HOLE CORRECTLY LOCATED. THE PLUNGER FOR THE SLIDE STOP IS INSERTED INTO THE PLUNGER TUBE'S REAR HOLE WHICH IS LARGER THAN THE PLUNGER TUBE'S FRONT HOLE.

Honestly just get a tool... It can be tough to do even with the tool. There are plenty of options on Brownells under $30...

Also you need to take a dremel tool with a ball grinder bit and relieve the backside to help spread the posts when crimping as they are less than 0.100 DIA. with a pinhole in the center. (1911s are bad for having the plunger tube loosen up). This assures almost a permanent attachment..
