    I'm thinking about building a ak in .223 , can I use a .223 galil bolt and a 762x39 bolt carrier?

I don't think that would work out too well but don't know for sure. I think there are Bulgarian bolts out there for .223.
If my answers frighten you then you should cease asking scary questions.

You will learn a LOT in this endeavor.
There are differences in trunions, bullet guides, bolts and carriers.

One "AK bolt" is certainly not the same as the next "AK bolt"...

Perhaps, but probably more "same" than a Galil bolt...

On the other hand if both the bolt and carrier are Galil, they may match each other perfectly. The OP's question translated: Will the Galil carrier work in an AK receiver; that is the question Mr Rausch?

That bolt will not work with a 74 trunnion and carrier.

It needs a AKM trunnion and carrier.

I don't know about carriers as I don't have any Galils here to compare against, but I found a great picture of a bunch of "AK type" bolts here:

Of particular interest is this picture:

From Left to right: AK 5.45X39 (Bulgarian), AK 7.62X39 (Romanian), Galil .223, Galil .308 and Valmet .308.

This picture is great because you can see the small stem of the 5.45 bolt and the different lug lengths between the 5.45 and 7.62 bolts.
5.56 guns will typically use many of the same parts as 5.45 guns, but the 5.56 bolts typically use a large stem 7.62 carrier so they are tricky to get all the correct parts.

From that picture, a 5.56 Galil bolt MIGHT just drop into an AKM trunion and carrier.
Then, you could just modify the underside of the carrier to clear the 5.56 mags and figure out how to put a 5.56 bullet guide into an AKM trunion.

And an AKM trunion won't be right for 5.56 mags, but perhaps the receiver will be enough to support the magazine in front...

Yep....it's been intrestisting getting parts together for one.

I ended up with a few parts that will not work....

                Spares for other projects lol
