    more ak63d trouble (resolved, I'm a moron)

So now on my ak63d build, I've got front trunnion and rsb pressed onto the barrel, and I decide to check the dust cover fittage. I find that in order for it to be anywhere close to fitting. the trunnion has to be 4mm back from the front of the receiver. This is way too far back for a mag to have any hope of fitting in the magwell. It seems like the receiver (ak-builder) is off.

    Any suggestions?

If it is an 80% where you need to drill the holes they usually come long and have to be trimmed down IIRC. I build off flats so I could be wrong though.

Here's a bad photo of where the trunnion wants to be in the receiver for dust cover to fit. It doesn't really add any new info from my description above. The rear trunnion can't move forward because all the underfolder holes would then be off. Front trunnion can't move back or the magwell will be off. I'm pretty much stuck. Unless I am missing something, the flat is simply wrong. It's an ak-builder Hungarian AMMS.

So I measured 3 random top covers I had laying around and the all measured 9.25". I measured some flats and the fixed stocks (w/ and w/o holes) measured 10.25", side and underfolder, and Yugo bulged flats all measured 10".

You sure the RSB doesn't need to be pressed onto the barrel farther? Have you checked that the gas tube fits well between the gas block and the RSB?
Just throwing out ideas because I have not had one of AKbuilders flats be too long. in fact, way back when, the AKTEAM didn't even have the receiver when they were pumping out barrel populations for BPs and all of those that I was around for had no issues with dust cover fitment.

I'm sure the RSB is pressed as far as it can go. I haven't pressed on the GB yet though. It would be next, except I thought hey! I should check that dust cover now!

So you don't think it's possible that I got the wrong flat by mistake? All dust covers are the same length?

There just isn't very many other things that could possibly be wrong. It's not a very complex system.

All my AKM and 74 dust covers, including this one, are very close to 9 3/8 inches, and all interchangable. So it isn't that.

Ok, I'm officially an idiot. I just realized from looking at my other AKMs that the back of the dust cover isn't supposed cover the back of the receiver. Duh. Can you tell I'm new at this?

I probably owe everyone here a beer or two by now! Thanks for putting up with me.

Could also be that the rear trunion is seated too far up

We have all been there. This is why we are here, to help each other out. Problem solved.

Glad you got it figured out! Don't sweat it no one was born knowing how to build these rifles...well except maybe Nicoroshi and Mrlonewolf...LOL. It still takes me at least three times as long as it does the wolf...

Yes the wolf rules. He assisted with my first two builds. This one now is my first attempt at doing everything on my own with my own tools.
