    Cold Bluing

I'm thinking about cold bluing my stainless 1911 barrel. It seems pretty straight forward. Anyone have experience working with cold blue like the Birchwood Casey stuff? Are there any cons? Thanks.

Stainless will not take a cold blue , carbon steel will.

No it's not don't do it it's CAN'T DO IT.

Stainless will not react with cold blue and even if it does mildly react the darkening will just wipe off.

If you want it blued you have two choices. Find a Gunsmith that has the ability to hot dip stainless or and I hate to even suggest it. Cerokote.

It's not the correct finish for a 1911 and will look out of place. That and the bushing will wear it and when the slide locks back it will look like crap

If you were to do I would do just the hood and nothing else. But it still won't look right at least not to me. A 1911 IMHO should be one of a few finishes,

Slow rust blued for the pre 1940's pistols or even color case hardening
Sand blast and Parkerized for mil spec reproductions
                Polished and blued for Colts
Bead blasted, or a light ground finish or a polished finish for stainless.

As Much as I do love and use Cerokote I would not coat a 1911 unless it was a last resort.

That would be like Cerokoting a Mauser or something. It's just not the correct finish.

Cerakote is definitely out of place on a 1911. Blasphemy.

My MSG did this to an old 1911 he had that was pitted.

                  It looked futt bugly!
