    May be a stupid question.

How do I adjust the depth on a drill press? I have the 2 nuts on the side (craftsman 10" drill press) and I can do it that way, but my question is how to I measure it? The base moves up and down, so would I put what I'm trying to drill up to the bit in the press, tighten the base, adjust the depth then start drillin?

I have no idea why this is so confusing to me
    Looking for more Mosins

After your drill bit is in and you adjusted your table. Your drill bit touches your object that needs to be drilled then measure between the top of your stop on your side with the 2 bolts or nuts . adjust distance between the two nuts or bolts to the top of the stop guide is your measurements.
Hopefully that helps if not take a picture of your adjusting nut for more detailed instructions

you're not going to get a precise depth cut with a drill press, install a DRO is about the best you can do on a press.

I am not familiar with your drill press.

        This may work:

If the distance the quill moves is the distance between the two nuts, use a caliper to measure between the bottom of the top nut and the top of the bottom nut.
Adjust the nuts (one or both ?) to achieve the desired depth.

On my old POS drill press I taped a 3" or 4" steel rule to the head of the machine
Then on the down stop I used a piece of 1/16" welding rod to make a pointer.
That was sandwiched between the nuts that lock the stop to the quill. Just cut off and bend the pointer to read zero when the quill is all the way up and you're good.

Has anyone ever mounted a caliper to their drill press? I was just thinking about that today. That way you could zero it out and have very precise measurements.
Working on my first AK, a Yugo M70B1.

Let me know if you need any cylinders hydro-tested or small oxygen cylinders filled in the south LA and north OC area. I also may be able to give calgunners discounts on certain victor products.

I have a craftsman drill press possibly the same one. I found those nuts to be basically useless. They'll start walking on you.

I think Enco has a caliper and mount for the Z axis.
