I was cleaning my sks and stupedly decided to move the lever that releases the gas piston forward all the way thinking this might remove the part. The lever goes all the way forward but the cam will not go into the vertical position because it is hitting the rod that pushes the piston, I have tried to put some pressure on the rod to push it back but it wont go. Any suggestions???????

help with my sks !!!!

keep calm have you lifted up the gas tube upper handguard assembly move the lever to the first stop and it should release it enough for you to manhandle the handguard straight up then once it is off put your finger on the piston extension and lift the lever highter and it should pop out and you will see the spring -
cant get there
that is the crux of the problem the lever is past the slot of travel so that I cant get it to go in the little holes. Because of that the cam face cant go to the vertical position and allow the piston to come out
thanksComment

oh you got to slap the top of the handguard a bit these things need to be manhandled but not really "forced" ya kind of have to jiggle it as you slap the handguard
you should be able to pry the handguard/gastube up from the back using a screwdriver as a lever as you jiggle the lever back downComment

The only way that I can see to do it is to stick the screwdriver between the top of the barrel and the bottom of the gas tube and pry there, is that where you think I should do it ?Comment

just go to bed and start fresh after watching a couple youtube videos about sks disassemblyComment

Here are some pics
the first one shows the lever that is as far back as I can get it , the larger ones show the cam being held by the rod. Thanks I really appreciate your help,Attached FilesLast edited by xbuilder9mm; 01-08-2017, 1:10 PM.Comment

ok the 4th pic shows the problem you need to take something like a tiny screwdriver or a dart and press the piston extension in while you are rotating the lever back down into its proper location follow the angle cut on the back of the gas tube and push that piston extension back in you caught an edge
it looks like this inthere
all you can see is the head with the chamfer

SUCCESS !!!!!!!
Thanks a lot Bohoki, that did it! I opened everything up to see what gave me al the trouble, I was trying to force it while it had to be finessed. The piston has two grooves close to the head, is it supposed to have rubber rings in them?
Again thanks for all your help, I was really at me wits endComment

that sks sure looks like it was made on a friday
before you make another post you need to have the safety on to take off the trigger guard
also you insert the wiggly bit of the spring into the carrier
hmm anything else
be careful taking out the cleaning kit it can act like a chinese fingertrap
the cleaning rod will not stay in place without the bayonet if you have no bayonet attached do not shoot it with cleaning rod in place
ooh another thing you cannot remove or replace a magazine with the bolt forwardComment
-
Thanks
I really appreciate your tips, the one thing I found out was the finger trap in the stock for the cleaning kit.
You mention about changing magazines, this one has a fixed magazine, can it be taken out and an after market removable one be used ?
What else do you see that makes you say it looks like it was made on a Friday.
thanksComment

Putting a removable mag on an SKS is a felony, leave it alone.I really appreciate your tips, the one thing I found out was the finger trap in the stock for the cleaning kit.

The machining is rough on your close up pictures, Friday build quality is what is being hinted at.Comment
