    Shotgun will not fire.

I have a maverick 88 and every time I pump it I have to play with the safety in order to get it to fire.

Any idea what might be wrong??

It could be a worn out spring in the safety so with recoil, the safety engages.

It could also be technique where you are somehow acting on the safety while firing.

Is the gun new, used, old?

Was the safety modified- switched from right to left hand or a larger cross bolt head??

Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

What do you have to do to the safety to get it to fire?

If you are having a safety issue you need to take it to a gunsmith and not try to fix it yourself it would be terrible if you tried to fix it and ended up disabling your safety or some other issue and hurt yourself or someone else in the process.

        Is that a new Maverick?

Have you properly excercise the safety selector?, are all the safety elements nice and smooth?

It is used and I have to take the safety on and off once or twice to get the trigger to reset

I've had a problem similar to what you are describing come into my shop before

soltion was clean the gun and it worked fine grit started gunking things up

Other problem can be a ill fitted safty which again needs to be worked on by a gunsmith.

I Tried getting rid of my Maverick 88 stripped receiver and two trigger assemblys before 2014 and the few inquires I got kept offering me 20$ plus transfer because the Maverick was known to have many trigger assembly failures then they still wanted me to drive a hour away.
Of course I said heck no.

I still have the trigger assembly's and receiver if your interested in one or if you think replacing all the springs is more worthwhile go for it.

One kit seems used and the other looks new but not in package.

i am a dedicated Mossberg 500 Fan but the 88 is a bit different line of firearms.

Do a complete take down on that 88 and see if prior fouled up that safety. Give it a good cleaning and inspection.
