I have a 16" midlength barrel and want to shorten to 12.5" Do you foresee any issues? Want to simulate a warsport build.

    Yep
    SBR, Felony, etc

you need a dedicated pistol lower if you are going to do that.

Could you just put it on an 80% lower? Or I think it is an SBR if between 10.5 and 14.5. I'm thinking about the same for my next build so subscribed to see where this goes.

I already have an 7.5 Adams pdw that works great but wanted to see about having a spare DI upper.

There is constructive possession of an NFA weapon (SBR) so you need a lower that was never used as a rifle and never had a stock attached to it. it could be a DROSed lower or a completed 80% build it don't matter as long as it was a pistol to begin with.

Then you can have any length barrel you like up to but not quite 16" long.

Now here's the funny thing. you can as long as all other laws are followed turn your AR pistol into a rifle and then convert back so long as you do not create a SBR in the process.
The ATF has stated that once a pistol always a pistol and it can go back and forth

No issues then you are good to go. All you need is one pistol lower that the upper will fit on.

It won't likely function with wimpy ammo.
You might be able to make it run with a KX3 or KX5 on the front.

Many thx Randall for the response. Do you think enlarging the gas port will help and put on a adjustable gas block to manage the gas?

                Enlarging the port will help.
It may still be finicky, but purposely oversizing the gas port and then tuning to specific ammo with an adjustable gas block will make it work.

Why not sell it and buy a carbine gas port barrel? Just a thought.
