    Measuring chamber size?

I am having problems with the commercial reloads that I use feeding reliably in my new Springfield XD, but they feed flawlessly in my old XD.

Is there an easy way to precisely measure the size of a barrel's chamber? I'm curious about the differences between the chambers.

I know an article in American Handgunner referenced using a steel plug gauge set to measure chamber size, but I'm not thrilled about spending $75 for something I'll use once.

Alternatively, does anyone in the East Bay have one of these plug gauge sets that I could use for a few minutes?

    Thanks,

Browse a HUGE selection of hunting rifles & shotguns, gun parts, gunsmithing tools, reloading equipment, ammo, and more! Brownells: Since 1939

Heat it up to about 190 degrees, plug the barrel with a patch on a jag about an inch forward of the chamber and pour in the cerrosafe.
Within an allotted time, it will cool down and shrink for easy removal.
After it cools completely, it grows back to the size of the chamber before it shrank for removal.
Cerrosafe is re-usable over and over, just re-melt and cast chambers whenever necesary.

not sure what your exact feed problem is but brand new XD feed ramps are know to be a little rough still. my slide would occasionally close only 1/2 way when i first bought it. sent it back and they polished the feed ramp and other surrounding areas and it has not had a single failure since except for a primer that didn't fire on some awful reloads i bought-not the gun's fault, shot about 2000 rnds so far.

per Springfield, it might just break in after a couple of hundred rounds but i'm glad i sent it back-smooth as silk now, i will feed everything, even the freaky self-defense rounds with crazy tips.

+1 Cerrosafe is the way to go if you want to get the most precise dimensional values of you chamber/neck/throat. If done correctly (I do it exactly as described above), you'll even be able to see a 3-D mirror image of your first 1-2" of rifling!

Come out to Sac Valley tomorrow around 3:00pm or so and say hi.
