I loved building my AKs and thought it was time do something fun again so a 1911 popped into my head.
Was thinking about getting an 80% frame because with the 100-150 back door rape for transferring a bare frame would make the bare frame cost as much as a completed RIA.
Thing is, I don't like much of what I see. The poly grip/lower frames that I see people working on here are terribly ugly (according to the wife).
Also I kind of wanted to make it visually a clone of the Marine Colt. So that means single stack with rail, dove-tail, etc.
Even worse, thanks to my love affair with bottle-necked pistol cartridges I was thinking of .357 sig chambering (though SIG is now selling a 1911 in 357sig makes this a little less odd).
I would like to hear about suggestions, ideas, tools needed, and what paths are available.
I figure this would end up costing me a total of about 1K to do and that doesn't bother me.
It isn't about registration or about government or anything else. I loved the feeling of accomplishment of doing it myself. That is the driving force here. It will be mine, made by me, and any flaws or quality will be my own doing or failure to do.
