Caliber conversion on S&W Model 625

I am wondering if anyone has any info on a company that can make me a .45 Colt cylinder for my S&W Model 625. I hear it has been done. I would just pop out the .45 ACP cylinder and drop in the .45 Colt.

    Thanks for any info.

It may be less costly to just find an S&W in 45 Colt.

Try Bowen Classic Arms. Does nice work, but like Turnbull, bring you wallet. I know they do caliber changes.

+1. By the time you add up parts and 'smith charges, you'll be a substantial way to the cost of a new gun. If you find one in the caliber you want, you'll have 2 guns for just a little more, instead of 1.1 guns.

Why do you want this cylinder? More power, just because?

              Model 625 cylinder conversion option

Thanks for all the replys. One of the reasons I bought the Model 625 was because I read somewhere you could easily replace the .45 ACP cylinder with a .45 Colt. Just pop one out and pop the other in. I thought it would be nice to have the option. Is this not the case?

              Thanks again.

This is generally not true. S&W did make a few mod 25's with interchangeable cylinders but they are rare. A Ruger Blackhawk with interchangeable cylinders or two separate S&W revolvers is your best and most inexpensive bet.

25's in 45LC have a sligthly longer cylinder than the 45ACP 25. You could have the barrel shortened and buy 2 45LC cylinders and have one cut for moon clips to shoot 45ACP. then you'll have a convertable gun. But it would be cheaper to buy a complete 45LC gun.

Bingo. Also, it's not just the plain cylinder you'll need- if you disassemble a S&W revolver (or most other revolvers) you will find some parts firmly stuck on the cylinder, requiring gunsmith tools to remove.

That's why conversions are seen only on single action revolvers.

Now, here's a thought- if you cut a .45 colt revolver to work with .45ACP moon clips, wouldn't that cylinder still fire .45 colt fine (and probably extract it still), as long as the cylinder is cut so the cartridge can head space on the front?

Try Dave Clements, at Clements Customs Guns. A true artist in metal. He makes custom cylinders for S&W revolvers. He is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. He recently did a conversion for me from .357 to .44 special using an OM three screw ruger. Perfect in every sense of the word.

Dave Clements, of Clements Custom Guns. Does first rate work in all respects. Not cheap, but very good. One of his specialties is S&W revolvers.
