    A better long rivet tool

After using an AK builder rivet tool for a while, I finally got around to making my own improved version of it.
My general feeling is that the AKbuilder tool was not built heavy duty enough for my liking.
I dislike the small floating piece that you set around the rivet to be able to see the rivet forming as it is not keyed to the clamping bolt in any way.
I did not like that the lower anvils are not positively aligned to the threaded ram and forming pins which allows the receiver to "walk" around as you are crushing a rivet.
My design improves on these things.

    I used:
    much thicker plates
4 posts so the upper plate can not twist
3/4-20 ram threads which are snugly fit to the upper plate
rivet forming rods are 1/2" diameter O1 tool steel that I will be heat treating to about 55c
Anvils are located with a nub on the bottom of each so they will not slide around
several more forming anvils including a correct flat-bottomed center support rivet one
Larger floating piece is captured to the fixture so it will not rotate
Levers to tighten and to lock the threaded ram (not done yet)
The fit between the formers and the threaded ram is just 0.001" for minimal "walk" while forming.

I'll take it! Seriously, if you make any extras I would like to be the first in line.

I hardened all the drill rod parts today and set a center support.
I had one if those crappy center support rivets that was sorta short and I over crushed it because my dimple might be a little too deep on my former punch.
I put the punch in the lathe and carbide tooling barely wants to cut it.
            55c is friggin hard.

Darn it. I guess at a minimum I will have to get busy and shim up my press so it can't flex from side to side. I saw how turbothis did his.

Have you done any yugos with that yet? The long front rivet might give you some troubles. My jig is all welded so I wouldn't have any flexing isdues. I'll post a pic when I get back to my tools.

I only built it last night so I have not done any work with it except to set a single 1mm center support today after I hardened the punches.
I did just get a Yugo kit in this week though.
I made anvils and setting punches with both 5/16" and 3/8" ball endmills so I have a proper sized punch for those bigger rivets as well as standard sized rivets.

I need to start thinking about what I will use when I'm ready to build my Chinese kit. I'll need the rivets and the tooling to match them.

Making custom forming punches and anvils that would work with the AKbuilder tool is probably not that hard...

I have all of that stuff, if you need rivets pm me your address.

Randall, long rivets on bulged trunnions are right next to the bulge. I don't think your tool with be able to squeeze in there with the raised area. I ran into that problem when I designed my jig about 4 years ago. I also ran into problems if the ram was bigger then 3/8". They could be turned down but I figured 3/8" grade 8 bolts are cheap and the set I have has lasted me for hundreds of builds.
