Thanks to everyone for all of the advice.

Is it me, or does this latch look reversed?

It should be held to the front (not the back as in the picture)
The latch looks like it's in the correct direction but my guess is the spring isn't installed correctly.

This picture is of a side folder latch I put on a milled M70 receiver but the spring orientation should be the same.
Tail of the spring back, and on the left. Loop of the spring behind the latch on the right.

        Hope that's helpful to you.

Pressed the barrel in today, seemed like the barrel likes jumping. Got it close enough, built up pressure on the press. Pounded on the ram with a rubber mallet the rest of the way in. AK master taught me this and it works to perfection. Headspace locks a bit snug on the GO gauge and approximately 1/4" from full battery on NO GO gauge. Does this seem correct or do I need to take further action to make sure? My kids will be firing this and can't afford to take chances.

Note galling on the barrel, kit came this way from AOA via a second party.

In my experience, the ones that pop like that are too tight of a fit.
With a 0.001" difference in diameters, they slide in smoothly right to the gauge.

            Your headspace looks great.

Those Yugo (Serbian) barrels seem to gall the most

It's not reversed, it's just test fitted without the spring in place to hold it forward. As you can see there are no holes drilled for the front trunnion rivets.

I've found that to be very true. It seems the steel the Yugo's used to make their barrels is noticeably softer than other AK factory barrels.
