Beretta D-Spring vs. Wolff RP hammer springs

    Hello-

I purchased a reduced power Wolff 16# hammer spring for the Beretta 92 some years ago, originally intending to install it in a Taurus PT92. Well, I never did, sold the Taurus, and now have a Beretta M9A1.

The Beretta D-Spring that Brownell's sells is OEM Beretta for the 92D, but I haven't been able to find how many # it is rated for...

Does anyone know how many # the Beretta OEM D-Spring is rated?

Just curious, thinking of installing the Wolff on the M9A1 because I already have it, and it has been sitting around in new condition for years. I would think that if it's the same there should be no issues with it being too 'light'. I kind of dislike light primer strikes, especially in a gun that may be used for HD.

Any comments or input would be appreciated.

A quick look around the interwebs puts it at 16 pounds, with a reduction of 3-4 pounds on the trigger pull.

I've been meaning to purchase and install a 92D spring in my 92FS too.

In the linked thread, my initial impression was that he perhaps put the wrong spring in for his gun (8040 and not listed as compatible on Wolff site), and that is why he did not notice a difference. Not worth the time.

If your information is correct, then I have installed the Wolff equivalent of the Beretta D-Spring. I really like it, but...

in an identical thread that I started today on the Beretta forum, it was suggested by one poster that the Beretta factory D-Spring is superior to the Wolff spring. That poster mentioned something about stacking or not as smooth/good trigger feel...YMMV....

Moreover, another poster stated that for years before all of this switching over to the D-Spring, he and others would use Ed Brown 1911 hammer springs rated at 19#, and that his double action pulls remain at only 7#! Those springs remain in all of his 92's to this day. His posts seem credible, but 7#!!! Hhhhmmm...

Though I happily noticed a discernible reduction in DA pull with the Wolff 16# spring, I am tempted to get the original D-Spring and also get the Ed Brown one. With respect to the latter, that poster stated they never had malfunctions or light primer strikes shooting NATO ammo. I believe this guy was in the service (and may have been an armorer).

If you have anything other than conjecture on the internet as to the # rating for the D-Spring, please post link(s).

Here is a link to my recently started thread on the Beretta forum. Hope that it's helpful and informative:

I have ordered the Ed Brown 1911 19# "Auto Competition Mainspring" (comes in set of 5) and a Beretta D-Spring from Brownell's. Will update as appropriate.

Not thrilled about the least expensive shipping charges of $7.95 for a total of six relatively small springs. I was going to get a small bottle of Oxpho-Blue or Formula 44-40 from them as well, but it would've jacked up shipping charges to $15.95. I passed on those. My small order is not going to keep them in business, that is for sure, and I guess you must pay a premium for a small order. I still don't like it much but haven't found them together elsewhere, and at least they carry the items.

Rather extensive and helpful thread on Wolff 16# spring vs. Beretta D spring vs. Ed Brown 1911 spring here:

I am using the Ed Brown spring- no failures testing numerous brands of 9mm ammo in a stock Beretta M9A1.

My DA trigger pull averages 6.5- 7#.

My SA trigger pull averages 3.5- 4#
