I know I can do it myself and I've tried. Tried really hard. I have a DPMS recon 308 with an AAC blackout flash hider that will not budge at all. I've already "rolled" it over with the correct size wrench and the only other way to remove it would be through the prongs. There is a $35 tool that I can buy to remove it but I rather consult a gunsmith to help me remove it. As far as I know, it is not pinned and welded on as it is a 16" barrel. I've tried to put a small wrench through the prongs and gave it a few hammer hits and no budge whatsoever. I've never came across a flash hider this impossible to remove. I'm located in SF and if anyone knows a place I could take it into that would be great. This thing is giving me a real headache.

you don't need a gunsmith; i had a calgunner in san bruno with a workbench help me out.
two things seem to be key: a longer wrench for more torque and leverage (e.g., breaker bar or dedicated AR wrench, which is longer for a reason), and a vise to hold the upper securely.. -
Were you able to get it off?2111

I tried to remove the AAC blackout FS on a recon. Applied enough force that the wrench lugs on the FH started to deform. I thought it must be pinned.
I contacted Dpms, their reply was take it to a gunsmith.
I found a thread at AR15.com on the subject. Said should soak the FH in hot water for several hours.
I soaked in hot water for 1.5 hrs, the water was by then cool, so I tried removing the FH and it came off fairly easily.
I did use a barrel vise but I don't think it would have been necessary, it came off that easy after soaking.
Apparently the AAC BO FH is attached with Rocksett which is water soluble.
Hope this info helps someone.Comment

I decided to post this info and revive an old thread.
I hoped to help someone avoid making mistakes and causing themselves grief.
Proper tools and technique can make it easy.
The OP on AR15 thread had tried the torch. Heated almost red hot and still had to apply so much torque that he shifted things enough in his reciever that his bolt would not retract when he pulled the charging handle.

Thanks for the input I didn't realize people had posted here afterwards. I was able to get it off, but I had to cut it with a dremel. Cut it down to find out that it was not pinned. I didn't use the right tools, I did what this guy did "human-vise" and it didn't work out. I didn't want to spend $30 on the 3-prong just to remove something I didn't want at the end then have the trouble of selling it afterwards. I have since replaced it with a muzzle brake and its an absolute joy to shoot! 3 prong FH on an ar10 was a little butt kicker for meComment
