    Black Oxide Finish??

    Anyone ever try it out?

Stumbled upon it somewhere. Kinda wanna refinish an AK I've had BBQ painted for awhile.

Anyone know how this finish holds up?

I've been using it for several years. I wouldn't call it a finish though. I'm sure somebody will google fu it and give an eloquent description. The main attraction to it for me is the simplicity. My first choice is Parkerizing. Sometimes if I have a Parkerized rifle and missed a small part while Parkerizing I just give the part a cleaning and a dip in the diluted black oxide and it is at least black. I have also done complete barreled receivers and parts but like I said my first choice is Parkerizing.

Man maybe I should just let a pro do a Cerakote finish on my Shotgun and AK anyways. I dont have a blast cabinet, plus I don't wanna spend money on tooling.

Black Oxide is easy to use and works pretty well. I think a better use might be on top of parkerizing to get a blacker color. It's cheap enough and is reusable - you could treat some hand tools and beat them up to see how it does.

how "transparent" is the black oxide finish? If you blue a rifle, it's transparent enough to see through, giving you that "deep" look.

Does this give you the deep look, or does it just look like spraypaint or anodizing?

I think that deep look is more a result of polishing.

not when it comes to BLUING, ask how I know.

black oxide, no idea. I'd love to see, in person, a couple jobs using it.

While they are using the name "black oxide" it is actually no different than any type of cold bluing .... basically colors the surface black with little rust or wear protection. True black oxide actually changes the surface metal into a different type and is not different than Hot Caustic bluing in many areas.

Cerakote would be MANY times better than that stuff AND you would not need to seal and/or oil the areas Cerakoted as it is a very rust resistant coating.
