Help removing cosmo

Anyone in the sac area (I live in citrus Heights), can remove cosmo off my mosin and my sks? Especially my sks.

I'm a bit lazy and i would be willing to pay if someone is willing to help me out.

Get some kerosene and give a good gun cleaning.

Well you better find someone cheep too, cause cleaning up a nasty gun can take half a day. half a days work to me is worth right around $200 and I don't think you are going to want to pay someone double the cost of your weapon to clean it.

Go to home depot and get a long wallpaper tray, and two gallons of odorless mineral spirits and a few tooth brush sized scrub brushes.

then take your weapon apart and soak it for a few days then come back and scrub it.

As for the oderless mineral spirits do I need to wear a mask? Is it some what toxic?
If I let it soak for a couple of days do I need to worry about rusting issues if I don't dry it quickly? Especially in the gas port and other tiny holed spots.

I've taken the SKS apart and it is every where. All the nook and crannies.
I have some frog lube that I'll use to coat the gun so I don't get rusting issues.

How about using hot boiling water and simple green?

I have cleaned out a CHICOM SKS that was completely packed, no internals moved as it was solid cosmoline in there, barrel too was solid.

Odorless mineral spirits in a small oil catch pan, toothbrush (used), rags, cleaning rod. Done inside an hour.

Just disassemble, dropping parts into oil pan with about an inch of Mineral spirits in it. Let soak while you continue breakdown. Only put metal parts in there.

Set wood furniture aside. Scrub the metal in the oil pan, cosmoline will melt away. If mineral spirits get to ugly for your taste, change it. But it will work even when it looks like mud.

use a jag and push as much out of the barrel as you can, I start with a .22 jag and work my way up to .30 cal. When you can pass just the 30 jag, put a well soaked mineral spirits patch through until it comes clean.

When done, dry all metal parts, you aren't at risk of rusting unless it is very humid or raining. Or if you get water of some type on it. (don't spill your beer on the naked metal parts.

I would go with a good quality oil, nothing fancy. Froglube has its place, I don't think it should go in an old warhorse that has never seen it before, but to each his own.

MN is even easier, follow nearly same instruction as above, but if you put Froglube on it a Bolshevik will turn over in his grave.

Getting cosmoline out of wood is another story. You can use mineral spirits to get it off the surface and a little bit subsurface, it will not affect the wood. Over time if the wood is saturated, it will weep up to the surface when hot.

Mosin is not to bad.

The chicom is packed with Cosmo. The bayo is stiff, gas port and barrel is gunked. Just every where.

As for the wood stock I've read some people wrapped it with a paper towel, put it in a black trash bag and leave it out side or in the trunk of their car and let the heat soak out the Cosmo from the wood.
But that's during the summer months. And I would like to shoot it asap.

Use a heat gun or blow dryer to heat up

Use a steam cleaner like a Steam Shark. Use the jet attachment and you'll be cosmo free in an hour. Wear gloves as the barrel can get pretty hot.

odorless mineral spirits is a very high flash point solvent meaning it will not just go up in flames on you. nor is it very volatile i.e. fumes in the air.

it will kill your skill if you have women's hands though. it just drys my skin out bad I to recommend gloves Nitrile.
it's not bad though there are worse things to use Just ask BigBob76 and five gallon bucket of gasoline

I used a cheap heat gun from Harbor Freight on my SKS and Acetone. The Acetone won't swell up the wood (another CG'er posted that tip).

Well, there is always the oven route, however your significant other may raise objection the to ruining of baking ware. Another option(weather and direct sunlight dependent) is to put it into a black trash back in direct sunlight for a couple hours. Should get most of it just leaving some minor work for you.

There is always the heat gun route as well.

The goal is to simply liquify the cosmo. By Heat or solvent

A $4 can of WD-40 will melt off the cosmo easily without too harsh of an odor. Cheap toothbrush and paper towels to scrub and wipe and your in business. Does not harm shellac stock finish.

Odorless mineral spirits is crap. Regular Mineral Spirits is very good too, but not cheap anymore and the fumes suck.

Blow dryer or heat gun will soften things up quicker.

Acetone or break cleaner will ruin your stock finish the second a drip hits it. Those solvents are very overkill. Not recommended

Best to take the action out of the stock anyway
