I purchased a 'later style' 8-sided barrel retaining nut to use instead of the original round one for the Remington 740. Guess what - there is a raised flange along the inside of the nut that appears to center the nut where the barrel threads are, and that raised area won't fit in my early 740 barrel. Am I doing something wrong?

Without seeing the parts that you have, I would say you are using the wrong parts.

Thanks for the response, Randall. Apparently the Remington 742 barrel retention nut (which is the 8-sided) does not work with the model 740 barrel (which is a circular nut that requires some sort of spanner wrench).Comment

Barrel retention nut and forearm attachment were some of the revisions that made the 740 a 742. There were also some bolt mods, as well as changing the thread direction on the barrel extension.Comment
