Get the cobalt or titanium coated drill bits. I use one of these and a couple of c-clamps, I also use it to locate the holes in the new receiver. http://ak-builder.com/index.php?disp...oduct_id=30060
I have never had that problem. You should only really have to drill out the long rivots. Did you grind the rivot heads off and dunk the trunion into water or something? Maybe hardened them from excessive grinding heat and dunk? Someone with more knowledge of this will chime in soon I am sure.

use cobalt drill bits. those Harbor Freight drill bits are junk. if your demilling a kit you should be grinding off the head of the rivet, then drill. its much faster.

The heads are already ground off...its just little stubs sticking out the trunions. I didn't do any heat treating dunking...just thinking it may have been as a side effect of torch cutting the kits up before I got it

grind them all the way down to the trunnion, then pop them out with a punch

grind flat and use a nail set (tapered punch) and punch them thru.
              better drill bits

Find somebody in your area with a mill. A nice sharp end mill will make it like a 5 second job. I'd do it for you if you were local.

I grind them flush with the sheetmetal, drill a 1/8" hole about 1/8" deep and then punch the short rivets out.
Makes super easy work of them.

I drill out the long rivets from both sides, leaving about 1/8" of solid rivet in the middle.
This weakens them so much that they drive out easily with a punch.

This will definitely work, I just have never had to drill a short rivot to get it to punch out.

+1 to titanium or cobalt bits, also make sure they are new or sharp. I completed a Saiga12 conversion using a hand held Dremel for rivet removal. Just take your time and use a vise.

anybody know if a table like this or similar would be able to attach to my drill press table? thinking it will help locate holes more precisely. not trying to mill with my press…
