I have a choice between a 10/22 or a .308 *0% lower. I have the basic tools-drill press and plunge hand router. Can these be built as easily as an ar15? Or would I be better off going to a cnc shop to have it done?

The 10/22 patterned 80%'s look quite simple to complete from video's I've seen. The 80% AR-10 patterns look a bit more complicated.... Watch some vids on youtube to get an idea of what's involved.

I always bore the 10-22 barrel hole as its important for the hole to be round and to fit the barrel snugly.

For the barrel hole they recommend you unplug the drill press.. and manually rotate the chuck with your hand as you get into the larger diameters to keep everything from getting wobbly.

go get a reamer or an adjustable reamer drill close to the correct size then ream to fit. if on a drill press you will need to be sure your table and receiver are true to the chuck.
As for how it should be done yeah Bore it would be the best way.Comment

On the dozen or so 80% 10/22's that I have built thus far (Razors & TM's) --- I did all of mine with either a drill press or a vertical mill. Never had an issue with any of them except with the first couple, which I did on the kitchen table with a cordless drill and a vise.......LOL !!!
And even those I figured out how to make them work once my machining skills got better (I sleeved one of them and shimmed the other).
Never had any issues running out of adjustment room on a scope from them being that far off of TDC either. I have had a whole lot more issues with those ridiculously high integral rail systems that are on the top of all of the currently 80% 10/22 receivers being sold not allowing me adjust the scope down far enough to sight-in sometimes.
I just remember to do my barrel holes in 3 steps. One hole (1st step) is for alignment, that way, if it is off-center --- you still have the ability to 'move' the hole to where you need. Next step is to open up you hole that you just made as close to barrel diameter as you can (step 2). Then you either use a reamer, silver & demming bit (slightly tapered) or round diamond hone/file to get it to where you want (step 3). If you aren't using a lathe and don't have the proper tools to check your machinery --- this is probably the best that you are going to do on anything 'table-top'.
The real 10/22 accuracy freaks have been know to drill & tap that hole and then they thread their barrel shanks. They will argue that the screwed in barrel produce superior groupings downrange. I wouldn't know, most all of my 10/22's are just for plinking.........LOL !!!
I got so good at doing these little suckers --- I was asked by a manufacturer a few years back to be a 'beta-tester' for the Razor 10/22 Magnum 80% while it was being designed and I ended up building the 3rd rifle (#3) ever invented. Considering that #1 has since cracked and died, #2 is still in the hands of the inventor and I am never, EVER getting rid of #3 --- I consider it one of my better accomplishments in the gun world.
The learning curve between hand-held tool at home and large & complicated machinery is steep & expensive for a home builder, so whenever you can partner up with other local gun builders to help dissipate your costs.

Completing a DPMS 308 is about the same process as completing an AR15 80%er. Doing it yourself will likely take 2 - 3 hours with a Jig - and 30 minutes on a CNC. We always recommend CNC locations to those in California with 2 or fewer receivers to finish.Comment
