    Quick AK Question

So I spent the afternoon populating a virgin barrel on a Yugo kit and have got everything pinned except the front sight. I've understood that no matter how confident one is about alignment it makes sense to shoot it first before pinning the sight.
Here's the question, if it needs to be moved, am I pulling it off and re pressing or is there some way to get a slight tweak while on the barrel?
Thanks in advance for the help.

I have always clamped the front trunnion and aligned everything off the trunnion and rear sight. I've only had to reset one front sight ever.

The Russian don't shoot and see. So you align everything as close to perfect as you can and you should be within a few thousandths of being right on.

As for giving the sight a little tweak foist off the fit must be good or it will either move to much (to loose) or not move at all (to tight). I use a very old pipe wrench that has no teeth on the jaws. I tape them up to prevent marring the sights and stick a cheater on it. a little pressure and it will move around where you need it.

The one time I didn't pin my front sight, I had to go pick it up from the 25 yard berm. My mistake was having the brake attached. Boy that thing really launched.
...but their exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom.

I lined it up three different ways and still liked what I saw once I pressed it on so I'll be surprised if it's not within Russian winter tolerances.
First build ever and way too much fun. Used the rivet press kits from AK builder so I see more of these in my future.
Correction; it was a polish kit from Apex.

          Welcome to the AKM disease...
Truley a great feeling to build a rifle, just be warned that they love to multiply leaving your wallet and bank account empty.
Now you just need a YUGO, Romanian, Polish underfolder, AMD65 and 63, Egyptian fixed & crutch stock and, and and...to keep it company. LOL

A rubber mallet works also for FSB adjustment.
              Don't hit the ears.
I normally just align, drill and pin
Only had a couple that decided to shoot in a way the required removal of pins and readjustment. 2-3 out of about 350-400.
Pretty good odds in my book.
If it looks good I say pin and run with it.
If for some reason it needs adjustment pressing the pins out and readjustment is a 10-15 minute job.

That's a really good point. Drilling soon.

Any guidance on a brake? Just get what I think is cool looking or is there some actual science I should be worried about?
The US made chrome lined barrel is16" and overall is plenty but those open threads look like they are begging to be covered.

I try to run what the variant I am building had on it originally (yes, I am a traditionalist).
Slant brake, muzzle nut for the AK47s, and half moon or zig-zag comps on the AK74s. Every now and then I will throw on a Bulgarian 4 piece for better flash suppression, and to direct the blast downrange.
Recoil from the AK74 or AK47 is quite manageable so not really worried about which comp is better than another on them.

This is my story as well, fancy furniture and breaks belong on ARs not AKs just my 2 cents

Can't beat a slant break. Those dumb Russians (me being one) got some thing right. Shoot with one to know what I'm talking about. Very contolable rapid fire.

just watch the WASR videos of people adjusting canted front sights to get different ways of rotating the Front Sight block

I think the Zig-Zag is a better brake then the slant as far as effectiveness. The blast to the side of a firing 74 with a zig-zag is distinctly uncomfortable and it's just a little 5.45. I've fired with and without the brake and w/o you really notice a difference in both muzzle rise and felt recoil.

What, nobody like moving the drum in the front sight base?

We do that too,,, but I've had some very particular customers and it is a matter of pride for me too. or a point of annoyance to look at a sight and see the post jacked over 1/16" of an inch.. I get the front sight block lined up then adjust the drum. (As bob goes out and looks through some of the barrels I did for him so he can call me a lier!!!) your stuff bob I just aligned the base not the sight post itself.

I don't do that anymore since I have bought the proper tool to adjust the post to center. What I'm going to do down the road is build an adapter for my collimator to get the proper height for AR's and AK's
