    Micro Galil Rifle Build

I recently purchased a micro galil pattern lower receiver. To the best of my knowledge, this piece came as an unmilled block with markings and was milled by ORF for a semi-auto build before they were bought.

This build will be 100% California legal and will attempt to replicate the look of the micro galil rifle in a semi-automatic civilian rifle.

To achieve legal OAL, a fake supressor was manufactured by a friend at MFIAP. The can is light-weight and has an authentic look, let me know if you need one for your own build!

Keep in mind this was a learning experience for me in many ways so feel free donate your constructive criticism. I've already finished this project and will be updating this post over time using my logs and photos.

Disclaimer: please do not attempt this build unless you are an experienced gunsmith. I take no responsibility if you are injured using tools, an incorrectly adjusted firearm or violate federal law!

Takiing delivery of the lower, showing Hebrew markings. This is a semi-auto lower which cannot accept the parts to make it select fire - the markings are for show.

First, I blast the part with aluminum oxide #120 until the part is completely matte. Then I clean the part with acetone and a rag, then heat the part with a heat gun until it's dry to ensure all the solvent has evaporated. Next I use a blower connected to my air compressor to blast off any remaining dust or sand.

The parts are suspended with picture hanging wire, and sprayed with Duracoat at 40psi with a HVLP gun. The parts are allowed to air dry overnight.

Most of the upper receiver parts were blasted and sprayed at the same time to ensure a consistent color. The finish came out smooth and I'm very happy with it at this point.

When sourcing parts for the rifle I came across a rare gas block from an early model Galil. I believe this version was called the 'Hadar' according to my research and has the pin hole in a slightly different location than most micros you will encounter. Some people have opted to drill an additional pin hole through the gas block - but I did not. I sourced a new one, but for reference here is a pic. The newer one has a more aggressive angle to it which you will see in my next post.

Did I mention that this build is not cheap?

Anything micro/krink style will cost a lot more to build, can't wait to see the end result.

The Micro Galil has an integral folding stock. The build process will involve seating a USA made, rifle-length barrel to the receiver.

The sticker is marked Israel so I do not remove it.

A new handguard is also fitted which has in integral rail on the bottom. The feel of this handguard is awesome to say the least.

The Micro Galil night sights from IWI/Mepro factory. They are extremely bright although my cellphone didn't capture it that well. The design is different than that of the other galil models. The illuminated portions are integrated into the normal sight assembly. Orange in the back and green in the front.

FYI, you only have ONE option to build this gun into a rifle. A rifle needs a barrel >16". Otherwise you are building a pistol. You need to permanently attach that extension to the barrel by pinning and welding it, otherwise CA says you're building a SBR. Rifle configs are OAL AND barrel length.

Maybe you should read the post again. The can is permanently attached and the options are regarding the stock - not the barrel.

                    2) do not pin the stock, and extend the barrel long enough to make OAL while the stock is folded.
Nowhere in the post does it say the can is permanently attached. You don't need to permanently attach barrel extensions to meet OAL. You do need to permanently attach for >16" barrel length. Your post doesn't express that difference. Just trying to make sure you don't get yourself into trouble.

                      Coming along nicely.
Personally I would have gone with a shorter fake can (blind pinned, and welded of course) to meet barrel length requirement of 16"+, and pinned the stock in the open position for OAL requirement of 30"+.
I used to have a 5.5" extension on one of my UF Yugos to be able to fold the stock, and found that the only time it was folded was in the safe or traveling to or from the range. In the year + I had it on the rifle I never once fired it folded. I have since locked the stock open on that build, and changed the muzzle device to a barrel nut. I think it looks (and is less front heavy) that way.
                      To each his own though.
                      Looks good.

Holy cow! That is a can! Reminds of the one Eric Bana uses in Blackhawk Down. A.K.A., biggest can ever. Looks good!
