    coonan receiver

    Hi everyone,
I have a DSA receiver that I was going to build with my Imbel parts kit, but saw the Sarco ad for coonan receivers for $325. Both are metric pattern, and I'm wondering if it's worth it to buy the Coonan receiver to build the rifle with. I only have one parts kit, so it's only one FAL for me, so I'm hoping to use the receiver that is higher quality and going to give me the least problems in the long run. Has anyone here built an FAL with a Coonan receiver? Anyone used both Coonan and DSA and can give input on the differences during the build?
Does anyone here shoot a Coonan rifle?
    thanks.

I have a Sarco Argy kit on a Coonan receiver and I'm pleased. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but the Coonan receivers are cast and the DSA receivers are forged. It wasn't an issue for my but it might be for you. I remember hearing once that FN type 3 receivers were cast too. I've never researched this further but if it's true then that aligns perfectly with mine.

I have several FALs. Century, Imbel, DSA, Coonan and one Enterprise L1A1. The Coonan is every bit the receiver the DSA is. They are both very good. The Century is also good. The Century was only 125.00 off gunbroker before the panic and it is good for a beater FAL. Being this is going to be your only FAL, the DSA will definitely hold it's value, but as time goes by I think Coonan will get the reputation as well.

If you go to Coonan's web site you can order an Argentine receiver and order a matching serial number for the parts kit. That is the way I went with my G1 build. The DSA is on an STG58 build and the Imbel used for the Sarco parts

Thanks for the info. I'm thinking now I'll just stick with my DSA receiver, but the coonan looks like a good alternative.

Early Century receivers, made by Hesse, were typical Hesse.

Later receivers were Century-marked Imbels that also showed Imbel markings...very good stuff.

If I did not have double digits already in FAL's, I'd have zero issues building another on a Coonan or DSA or Imbel-marked Century.

DSA, to my knowledge, still offers a discount to FAL Files members on their receivers.

I just picked up an Argy-specific Coonan and it looks well-made. I have not built it up yet though. Here's a detailed review of the Coonan upper by FAL guru, Gunplumber:

I have built a couple FAL's on Coonan receivers including my personal Argentine kit.
I think they are some of the nicest receivers you can get.
