Most people shoot for between 30-80 lb. and the 1st gas-tube hole that lines up........however actual Colt spec. was 40lbs. minimum.
Headspace:There is some dispute over the need to check the headspace on AR15/M16 rifles on these forums. Some say you must. Some say you should. Some say you don't have to.Whether you check the headsp
Though some of the ultra-lite .223 rifles with plastic uppers and some of the .22 conversion plainly state --- "do NOT torque above 25lbs."
Hope that helps some...... -
Specs usually come with the barrel but, wherever you can get proper alignment of the gas tube between 35-80 ft#'s is sufficient. Just make sure you tighten and loosen it a couple of times before finally torqing it down completely in order to break in the threads.
Some people may recommend using an anti seize compound as well in case you wanna have an easier barrel swap down the road.

Apply grease to threads and front face of barrel extension where the nut slides while torquing.
Torque to 50 ft-lbs and then loosen.
Repeat tighten/loosen 3 times to burnish threads.
Torque to 30 ft-lbs.
Set torque wrench to 80 ft-lbs.
Tighten barrel nut until proper alignment is achieved.
If the wrench clicks-over to 80 ft-lbs before proper alignment is reached, try a different barrel nut, or install shims between barrel nut and barrel to reach proper torque between 30 ft-lbs and 80 ft-lbs.Randall Rausch
