16 years ago, when those were being sold, they had an insert in the chamber so it could shoot x39 ammo. You might look into that. If it's done correctly, inserts work.

I've got one that I've been intending to re-barrel as well. I've got the x39 mag(somewhere) and as I recall the difference was negligible. A better question would be...have you got a source for the x39 barrels?

on the ammo front...theres a REALLY boring video on youtube of a guy doing cartridge conversions and making 7.62x45 ammo. I've been thinking about trying it to feed my other 52.

If you can get an old barrel and a new barrel blank I know a guy with a lathe that can contour and thread a barrel.

That's been my intention. I'll probably get around to it right after the 20 other projects I'm lagging on.

although looking back....somehow I completely missed the bit where Mr. DRH said prexis is making barrels.

Might want to use a .308 bore diameter barrel to take advantage of better bullet selections, but turning a blank would be a major chore/cost.

How about making your own brass from 30 rem? better ballistics with 7.62x45mm

You need to start reloading. I love weirdo calibers.

I'm thinking of doing a VZ52/57 rebuild also. Does anyone know of a gunsmith in the SoCal area that can help me press, pin , etc. the new barrel?

I don't think you'll find anyone specializing in this particular platform, but if you're in the LA area I would recommend talking to randall(ar15barrels).

My understanding is that the barrel presses in and is pinned like any AK platform. I assume that anyone setup for installing AK barrels can do a VZ52 but that's an assumption. If pictures of the barrel profile, gas system, etc. help I can provide pics.

it's similar to an AK in that it's press and pin, but beyond that I'm not sure. As I recall the barrel pin is smaller and may require require a different drill/reamer and support fixture that somebody AK specific possibly wouldn't have. I've been meaning to get one of my vz's out to look and see if an offset pusher would be necessary to press the barrel out...not sure.
