      Some things I found helpful:
      Roll pin punches
Needle nose pliers (to hold the pins)
Torque wrench (get the barrel nut tightened to proper spec)
Anti seize grease (for the barrel nut, in case you want to change it out later)
Vice block (to prevent twisting the upper)
Masking/electrical tape (to protect the finish when installing ejection cover pin)
Hand guard installation tool (not required but makes it easier if you are using standard delta ring front hand guards).

        Get ready for useless information!

I don't do AR's, but tools I find essential for gunsmithing that are cheap and everyone should own anyways:

-a punch set: brass AND steel
-At least one file, preferably two (preferably twenty, but so it goes). Do NOT skimp on a file, buy the best file money can buy. You only need two. Single cut bastard, and single cut fine. The rest come later. The finest quality money can buy, even fine files are cheap.
        -Arkansas stone. nuff said.

Seriously (not really serious), owning two amazing files should be a requirement to get your passport issued.

              Receiver block.
              Solid workbench.
              Bench Vise.
              Barrel nut alignment gauge pin.
              Rail alignment fixture.
Rail system specific barrel nut wrench.

I have well over $1000 worth of AR-15 upper assembly tooling.
I charge $25 to assemble an upper from a box of parts.
