    Removing Stain

A buddy of mine decided to touch up a mosin he had without taking it apart (I told him he shouldn't but he did it anyways) and got a bit of stain on some of the metal parts. Most of the stain is on the barrel bands. Is there something he can use that:

    1) Will get the stain off?

    2) Won't hurt the metal?

    Thanks for the assistance

Paint thinner usually works, and does not damage the blue.

You'd be surprised what WD40 will remove.
        or acetone
        0000 steel wool and oil
