Putting a bolt in a boltless mosin

So got a garage sale mosin without a bolt I'm looking for a used bolt to install. My question is are they all pretty much interchangeable? And does any one have a set of go- no go gauges I can borrow ?

Are you in San Diego? I have a no go guage....don't need a field guage and if it will chamber a round it will "go"...The headspace is off the bolt head which is the loose piece on the front of the bolt with the locking lugs....I'm told and have no reason to doubt that the bodies, cocking piece, slider, firing pin and spring, etc are not a factor in headspace..you do have to have it headspaced and you also need to verify the protrusion of the firing pin with the funny looking little tool that comes with mosins...the protrusion has to be over .075 and under .095 if memory serves me (don't rely on anything I'm stating...it could be incorrect and you must check it for yourself)..if the firing pin is "too short" it may not fire the primer and if "too long" it can pierce the primer and blow lots of bad stuff back in your face.

I can check headspace and firing pin protrusion in San Diego but if the headspace is not correct I can't do anything to correct it...not a gunsmith. You can p/m me if you are in san Diego
God and the Constitution give me my rights and actions...any other input is just blabbering.

You might get lucky but then again maybe not. in any event unless the bolt is close but tight there is not going to be much you can do with out setting the barrel back

Update your profile with your location so people know where you are.
Then, you might have better luck in asking to borrow headspace gauges...

Gotta check headspace for sure. Its possible you can contact a local gun store with a smith and see if they'll check your headspace for ya. They may charge you a few bucks or they may be cool and just check it for you.

No go is worthless gauge in Mosins and most milsurps. The tolerances are too loose. The Field gauge is the only one you need.

That said, headspace is almost never an issue in Mosins. They were made to function in WWI trench warfare conditions. The action is also one of the strongest made. While I have a field gauge, I'd have no worries about shooting a couple rounds from the hip and examining brass for bulges, wierd primers or case stretching. If nothing shows up, shoot with confidence.

If by some freakish occurance it was out of headspace, swapping the bolt head is the fix. No need to set the barrel back or do any of the shenanigans needed with most rifles.
