Staked castle nut removal Colt AR 15

    Evening all,
I need to install a magpul ASAP on a new Colt 6920 for a sling. The buffer tube is double staked as you all know,
I have the wrench, and have applied reasonable pressure, but it won't budge, I did not give it the full on gorilla grip force,
Also, I do not have a magazine mounting block to chuck it up in a vise yet.
    Any suggestions?
PS, have done allot of wrenching on other guns, but, this is my first experience with the AR platform,
Have had the 6920 apart and accessorized it, and know it pretty well, along with the Jesus springs, but, I am unsure about using the gorilla grip to remove the buffer tube,
    Thanks, Paul

Get a magazine well block and put it in a vise which is mounted on a solid workbench.

And then give it the gorilla grip? maybe persuade it a bit with a mallet?
      Thanks for the knowledge Randall,

        No mallet will be needed.
Once you have the receiver stabilized so it does not move, you will be able to pop the staked nut loose with one hand on the wrench.

Your problem now is holding the lower still...

take a dremel, cut the nut off and just replace it with a new one.

                  A sawzall will work too.
Just cut right through the back 1/3 of the receiver, then replace it with a new one.

yes because receivers are as easy to replace as a castle nut.

i just took a closer look at what you're doing ... does it NEED to be an ASAP? there are several rear sling mounts that attach to the buffer tube without forcing you to remove the end plate -- GG&G's agency adapters, the tangodown PR-4, the tactical link Z-360 (might be closest to the ASAP), the midwest industries MCTAR-30HD, etc.

                        you're right strongpoint,
this is the way to go, i really do not want to disturb the factory stakes unless i have to.
seems like these adapters fit over the castle nut so magpul stock collapses fully, and shouldn't get in the way of the medium size BCM charging handle.
and i really don't mind it being a tiny bit bulkier, with all the stuff i have accessorized the colt with, i won't even notice it. am considering going with the Midwest Industries MCTAR-13.
                        Thanks, Paul

be careful of this mindset. little things add up.

come to think of it, i think i have an MCTAR-30HD sitting around here. if you decide you're interested in that model instead, PM me first.
