    AK front sight fix question.

I am trying to fix my AK front site. It cants to the right. I have used my front sight tool and adjusted it left, all the way left. And it still hits about 1" to left of the bullseye. I cannot zero it.

I called a gunsmith and he told me I have to replace the barrel. On top of that, he cannot fix it because it is a home build, ie. no serial number.

I missed an opportunity with Nico to get it fixed that wont come around again. Is there anyone else near stockton that might be able to help me?

Thanks Jayruta, but I have no way of pressing it out.

I prefer to keep the original sights, thanks for the suggestion though.

I fixed mine by knocking out the pins and paralleling the front sight to the rear sight trunnion and re-setting the pins. I didn't have to drill any.

Punch out the pins, and rotate the front sight (rubber mallet works well)until aligned with RSB then re-drill (#32 drill bit), and punch pins back in.

Couple methods I use for alignment>
            Laser

But even more accurate than that is the simple 2 cleaning rod method.
Your eye can tell if both rods are parallel or not within a fraction of a degree>

One rod on the RSB with sight leaf up, and another on top of FSB ears.
If one or both of the FSB ears are bent press out the windage drum, and come off the machined hole that it's installed into on the FSB.

The gunsmith you talked to is suffering from cranial rectosis. You do not have to replace the barrel to do this. Don't even have to remove it from the firearm.

^genius. Or ingenious. I spent 40 bucks on a laser bore scope when 2 bucks of rod would have done it. Bravo bud!

Thanks for the great advice. Question though, when I re-drill the holes, will the pins keep the front sight post in the same position? The gunsmith was saying that I would have to fill the existing holes in, which it would then be better to just replace the barrel and repopulate. Which I absolutely do not want to do.

Most of the time the existing pins will work. If not just get larger pins.

A right angle ruler is also helpful as you can set it on one side of the gun and measure the gap between the angle and the front sight hood. Repeat on the other side to verify that it is centered.

A crescent wrench or other wrench can help with leverage to rotate the sight.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
                  (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

The existing holes should be close and the fsb should be a press fit on the barrel.
I have never had an issue with one moving after doing a repair like this (without filling the old holes or a barrel replacement).
