    Installing Muzzle Brake

I have a Ruger Mini-14, 580 series with the factory 18" barrel, I'd like to install a muzzle brake on it. I consider myself a fairly industrious type of person, so I'd like to tackle this project myself, since my luck at finding a gunsmith to do the work here in the bay area has been zip!

Anyway, I want to cut the barrel down to and include the muzzle brake within the 16 inches. Now if I'm correct (though I may be wrong), this is legit, since the muzzle brake counts as part of the barrel. Also I know about permanently installing this device onto the barrel, by silver soldering as I understand it.

Some would argue the idea of cutting the barrel down isn't worth it, but I have seen photos and read some pretty good reports on other folks who have done similiar upgrades. This of course in addition to doing a trigger job, and bedding the stock.

What I want is to find a stock that has the look, and feel of what you'd find on the Springfield Socom 16 or Socom II, that smooth look as I don't care for the checkering patterns found on the factory stock. As it is, I've swapped the factory stock for a Butler Creek, which helped tighten up the groupings in addition to installing a Ultimak Scout Rail.

My final step is to Duracoat all the parts Socom Black, I would also need to address the issue of replacing the front sight and rear sight with some aftermarket parts, most likely the Trijicon type sights, think they make something for the Mini's.

At any rate those are my thoughts, any input is greatly appreciated, I know some of you are mad about comments I made on another section of this site, please don't hold that against me. That was my fingers working ahead of my brain, and I've apologized admitting I was wrong.

    Thanks,

    Frank

Try a hogue stock. Be sure you crown the barrel properly.
