I sincerely appreciate all the above advice. I figured while shooting that in a pinch I could have pulled out the rivet and kept shooting.

I ordered 2 'AK Gas Piston Rivets' from AK-Builder.com. I figured it could not hurt to have a spare in case I nerf the installation or if it ever happens again. I appreciate the fact that the site has cheap shipping for small items. It seems usually you pay 10x the price of the item on shipping little parts like that.

A nail works just as good as the AK builder rivet... Just pound in, leave the protruding bit about 1/8" long and flatted both ends as any other rivet....
        Poke'm with a stick!

Just use nail comrade, pull one out of crate, hammer in with boot, and go back to front line!

I think they are suppose to be welded over. At least it looks like all mine have been welded over and sanded smooth.

No welding. Just smashed and ground flush.
