    AK scope mount

I love shooting with a scope because my right eye sucks. I am building an AK right now. Does the sidemount have to be installed during the build? It looks like it is riveted on, can I add it later or does it have to be done when still a flat?
I am thinking of finding some eastern block looking scope to stay in character.
    Thanks

If going side mount, you really need to do it during the build. Mostly because the rear rivet goes into the rear trunnion, let alone the other two holes + rivets. It simplifies the whole process to do it once all at one time. Otherwise you would have to go back and drill out the rear rivet trunnion rivet and then mess up your finish and get those holes and rivets in after taking apart your receiver again. Beryl type setups are usually flimsy add ons or whole new dust covers ala the Texas one. Those might need fitting work but that is doable later.

Funds are low right now. If I just want to get the rail and get the rest later. I don't want any tactical stuff. Just the scope later. What rail would be appropriate and I can get the mount later?
It will go on my Maadi build.
        Thanks

Get the appropriate one for you build though I guess they are standard. I bought the ak-74 rail style, I know there is a shorter one though. AK-Builder sells just the rail. Remember that your riveting pattern is different. You don't want round headed rivets on the outside of the rail so your reverse them.

Actually, I have seen them for that price but AK-Builder sells them for $29.95 for the Romanian style side mount. (I hope this is the right one for my fixed stock Maadi)
I ordered it with expedited shipping. I hope it arrives before next Saturday. The cheap ones sold elsewhere are UTG and they are actually not riveted but screwed to the receiver. I would rather rivet during the build.

High-quality AK-Builder ak-builder romanian/polish akm scope rail made in the USA. Precision fit and finish for professional builds.

I was just going to keep this one iron sights but I think I will regret it if I don't do it during the build. At 100 yards my right eye is crap without a scope.

I like the looks of this scope when funds allow:

Looking at the fixed rear stock Maadi's I would have to say, yes two long "through" type rear rivets. Should be good.

Yeah fixed stock rivets are fine to add scope rail.

I hope you don't mind me piggybacking your thread but I'm in an almost identical situation.

I built my Romanian 47 a few years ago without a rail and I'd like to add one now. I ordered the Romanian rail from AK Builder and it came with only two small rivets. Should it have come with the long trunnion rivet? If I still need to order that will a standard Romy long rivet work or do I need one a little longer to fit the rail?

FYI, my first park job came out horrible so I was going to redo the finish anyway.

                      AK side rail

Yes. you can add a side rail on a finished AK.
Some rails, mostly Russian/European style, use the forward of the two rear trunnion rivets so it is good to add the rail during build to avoid removing that rivet later.
There is a Chinese rail that has three rivet locations and does not use the rear trunnion rivet--this is the one to get for a completed AK.
You will notice that the rear rivet for the rail could interfere with the axis pin retainer plate. If it does interfere you can file the rivet head on the inside flat like the center support rivet to allow the retainer plated to be installed.
An alternate axis pin retainer would be the wire spring or E washers.
You can get the Chinese rail on Amazon for about $10. It is steel and well made.

So as to the question of the length of the stock rivet. Mine is not built yet, will the kit rivet work? The description says that it comes with the rivets, I assumed all three. If it comes with only the short ones I assume I use the standard trunion rivet?

I would advise against a POSP. That thing is stupid high and you're gonna get something like a neckweld.
