DPMS to YHM conversion question...

OK, I currently have a DPMS kity kat upper (7.5in) that came pretty stock with the A2 FSB and small free float tube (A3 upper though). Yes, I have a registered AR AW pistol...

My plan is to convert it to a YHM speter upper with a pig break and low profile gas block.

Problem. I have absolutely NO idea how to remove the original DPMS smooth round tube.
I thik I'm OK with the rest of the work but how do I get this stupid thing off?
I don't want to just start wrenching on it to find out either. Do I need a strap wrench like on a Hogue float tube?

Yes, this is a double post from AR15.com. I woudl really like to know since I have a box of parts sitting in front of me mocking me right now waiting to be installed

Step #1: You need to remove FSB and muzzle device.

Step #2: Make sure what type of DPMS forearm do you have. If it is one-piece, you need special tool to unscrew it from receiver side. Oh, a big strap wrench might work. If it is two-piece, you will need a standard barrel wrench to remove it.

As for the low-profile thing, you have many choices.

Solution #1: Use your original FSB because it was tapped and drilled. You just need to chop and refinish it to make your own low-profile gas block. You can use original tapper pins and install them back without any modification.

Solution #2: Use any low-profile gas block on the market. Just make sure it (gas port alignment) has been installed correctly.

The kitty kat I took apart last week had a two piece handguard tube.
It took a mighty tug with my strap wrench to pop the tube loose.
I use a DPMS freefloat wrench for the barrel nut.

If you like buying tools, get the tools and do it yourself.
It will cost you more in tools than I charge for the job though.

I already ordered the parts for the change over and they are sitting in the box in front of me. The only thing I don't have is a strap wrench... Time to go to the auto store I guess.

Got it figured out and now looks smoking good. I used a large pipe wrench with a leather glove as a pad for the teeth so I didn' mar up the DPMS tube that was coming off. Now i need a set of diopter sights...
