    Stainless S&W m58?

I just picked up a sweet, custom model 58, and it sure looks like it is stainless steel. I know that S&W didn't make a stainless M58 (model 57 were offered in stainless, called the 657).

So I am assuming my gun is hard chrome plated or a nickel type of finish. Is there a non-destructive test to figure out what it's finished with? The hammer and trigger are also finished is a matte silver finish.

The major components like frame, barrel, cylinder, ejector rod are a semi-polished stainless like finish.

The gun was customized by ER Stroup. He added a new bull barrel converted to 45C Colt, adjustable sites added, action job, Mag-Na-port, etc.

I'll post a picture of it when it's back from the holster shop.

58 should be the fixed sight version of the 57 and would have been available in blued or nickel, but most were blued.
They called the 58 the highway patrolman.
It could also have had a custom finish done when it was converted...

Yes. It must have a nickel finish. It looks very wear resistant. And it looks perfect for its age.

Original S&W nickel finishes from 40+ years ago will almost all be yellowing by now.
Newer work will not be yellowed.

The Highway Patrolman was the Model 28. N frame in .357 mag.

I think they took model 28's and put the 41 mag barrels in them to make the model 58's.

58 was an M&P type gun with fixed sights and a 4" heavy barrel, similar to Mod 13 and HB Mod 10 K frames. The 28 was a scaled-back 27 with adjustable sights and standard weight barrel with ramp front sight, and a less lustrous blue. The majority of Highway Patrolmans were 4".

Are the 57 and 58 basically identical besides the rear sight being fixed vs. adjustable?

Yes. Same caliber and frame but 58 lacked adjustable sights, barrel under lug, target hammer and trigger, and target stocks. Came with 4" heavy barrel.

To my way of thinking the 58 was far more practical than the 57.

                    Hello group

Thought some photos of my S&W 57/58 would help this tread

Both are .41 magnum's and both are 4"
