    80% lower engraving question

Question about engraving: I don't plan on transferring these lowers until they transfer to my kids. It sounds like I need to engrave my name in it as the manufacturer? I don't particularly want that on the rifle, I actually wanted to put a fictional manufacturer on it. Would that prevent transfer? Is there no way to transfer it without my name on it?

Have your kids help build them with you? I don't know the "real" answer. I do know its "supposed" to be your name, location, and a serial number. Don't think this helped much but hopefully one of the legal gurus will comment.

I think something like the below is totally acceptable......

      Whatsamatta U Firearms
      YourCity CA USA

      Model BamBam 5000
      Cal Multi
      SN 123456

Has to be to a certain depth and font size.

You don't need to put your actual name on it if I recall correctly.

But now if it gets stolen, you can get it back, the system doesn't know what to do with firearms with no legal markings, so even if they recover it they have no way to process it. Also if it needs to be sold in the future, the info is there.
Also it will now look "normal" to any Johnny Laws not up on the law is my thinking.

Or some I think engrave something on the inside to identify it but again, not sure that will be much help if it's something non standard and they can't put the info into the system to return it to you if it got stolen.

EDIT. You MUST put your actual name on when you sell. But looks like fictional is ok in the mean time.

does engraving have to be done before you finish the 80 off? I assume if its finished to 100 you have to have engraving done by FFL engraver right?

I understand you can have a 100% engraved as long as you don't leave the premises.

It's my understanding you don't need to do the identification engraving until you plan on transferring the gun. That would however mess up the finish a bit which you could fill in with paint or some other suitable coating.
