Gun Smith for Chicom SKS

Well I am in the LB/Southern LA/Northern OC county area and unfortunately my local gunsmith had passed away. I searched online and called what popped up, unfortunately no one deals with surplus like this Chinese SKS I been looking at.

It's a Century Import type 56 and over all it's in good shape. It does have some termites on it (pitting) along with some minor rust surface. I know how to remove the rust but also wanted to buff out the pitting and such. I don't have any of the equipment nor do I know how to use it. Just the elbow grease and 000 steel wool part.

So any one know a good gun smith that can do that kind of work?

its a nice one with threaded barrel and milled trigger guard just rub it with a pre 82 penny and some wd40 its never going to be perfect

i completely redid my chincom a few months ago,stripped and re-blued. looks 6years old and not 50+redid the wood also....

i love it and so does everyone else that has held her

Wire brush, cordless drill, small jar of rust converter. If you want to get really fancy, mapp gas torch, flux, and silver solder to fill in the pitting after you get rid of the rust.

that looks pretty nice.The stock on mine is actually in good shape, no trench art on it but still good condition. I think I will strip it (since it's non matching) and put that nice orange Shellac on int like the Chicom Commercial ones.

What 6mm said. Very carefully and non-destructively clean off any active rust - without further damaging the original finish.

Leave the cold blue alone - it is really nasty, stinking, vile, toxic waste crap goo that will ruin and devalue a vintage military rifle.

Non matching has nothing to do with it. That "nice orange shellac" looks good on later rifles where it is the original finish. It won't improve the looks or value of an early rifle like these. The best and smartest thing one can do with these is to carefully and non-destructively clean them and then leave them alone.

Electrolysis will remove all of that rust without harming the finish here a tutorial i posted a while back. You can see how well it worked on a mini-14 covered in rust from years of neglect and cat piss.

You can grind most of that out and then blast and parkerize it all to hide the remainder.
It might get expensive though...
