Remove rust

What would you suggest to remove rust without damaging the bluing?

0000 steel wool, I personally use it dry but some people prefer to add oil.

If you do it wet the oil can trap little bits of rust in the wool and you end up dragging it on the surface of the metal.

I keep it dry and follow it up with oil after the rust has been wiped away.

Never use any steel wool on any bluing. It will scratch the blue no matter how fine the wool is. For small areas use the edge of a nickle (5 cent piece) with oil. The nickle is soft enough to not leave any scratches and hard enough to remove any rust bits.

000 steel wool & aluma cut, watch out for the edges go light. I have a '55 mod 70 someone the other day commented that it looked brand new.

I've used the nickel to remove rust before. You need to be careful and go slowly. On a larger rusty area I use the OOOO steel wool.

Try Big 45 Frontier metal cleaner. It looks like steel wool with a flat edge. I heard about it on the CMP forum and ordered a couple to test out. They worked great on removing rust from a barrel and still left the bluing.

This great information. I will certainly use these method to remove rust. Plus I will have to be vigilant in applying oil to prevent rust in the first place. Anyways, thanks OP for the question.
