Is there a compelling reason to use punches instead of an arbor press? Harbor freight has presses at a reasonable price, but no obvious way to chuck up a pin die...I'd much rather press pins out than use a hammer and pin punch...

Press VS punches

the pin arbors are able to me manufactured or purchased. AK Builder sells a pin arbor. Get both though, there is a time and a place for both really....but their exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom. -
A press always beats a hammer and a punch.
Modify the press so you can hold punches.
I'm making a drill chuck adapter for my 25ton press so that I can hold any diameter piece of round stock I want.
Then it's just a matter of getting some tool steel blanks the right diameters and cutting them to the lengths I need.
Keep everything as short and as thick as possible to reduce deflection.Randall Rausch
