My dad and grandfather both have AMT 1911 pistols from the late 70's or early 80's. The original rear sight sits in a narrow channel and is pinned horizontally at the front of it. The rear uses a screw for elevation which should have detents.
These guns have a habit of shearing off the pin and on one of them, the detent does not work with any screw we have found for it.
The top of the slide is not as wide as the sides. The top corners are rounded off. The sight does not use a traditional dove tail.
Would an adjustable revolver rear sight, such as what I have on my Smith X frame, work for a 1911? Is there a different aftermarket option? I know the slide moves vs. the stationary revolver sight, so would this change things?
We talked to a local gun smith about fixing the sight. He gave us a new screw which still didn't work with the detent. He didn't say much about using a completely different sight.
Does anyone here have experience with swapping sights on this style of a slide? I don't care about additional machining to the gun. It is useless with a sight that moves and self destructs. I could do some basic milling myself, but would prefer to have a pro do it.
