    Maglula Mini 14 loader fix

Not a gunsmith and this is just a work around but I thought I'd post it. Bought a Ruger mini 14 with five round mag. BOught a Maglula stripper clip loader for it. Magic. quick easy loading.
Problems came with my new Ruger ten round factory mags. The new Ruger factory mags purchased from whoever supplier. has a different pattern of grooves on the stamped steel sides of the mag. Problem is, the groove the maglula stripper loader slides into for stabilization is missing from the ten rounders and from what pictures
Here is a picture of the mags and you can see the difference in side grooves. Doesnt look like much but the lack of the groove allows the loader to easily tilt which jams up the loading process.

My Bubba fix was to strap the loader to the ten round mag with a nylon tie. You slip it over the front of the mag first then slip the loader over the rear of the magazine. Once the loader is stabilized and the mag placed on a hard surface, the loading works as it should. By the way, Promag magazines have the groove in the correct spot on their ten rounders from what i can tell from pictures.

This picture has two two shorter ties put together. Also tried an eight inch tie and it is just short of hooking up so you need a longer tie if you want only one tie. Also take out a pliers and where the tie goes around corner on the mag, crimp it into a permanet 90 degree corner. Makes a better fit.
This is not Rugers problem really, it is Maglula banking on that groove being in place on all Ruger mags. Ruger has the right to use whatever supplier they want as long as the mags work and are durable. The maglula loader has to be modified to provide a slip in tunnel for the mag. Doesn't have to lock up as their AR mag does, just as long as it stays aligned when you put it on a hard surface and press in the ammo.

Great tip, thx! Getting a Maglula soon, so I suspect this will come in handy...

Good Luck. I mailed Maglula. No response yet.
Ruger too. but it's not their problem. I don't know who makes their ten round mags but they are not as good as the five round mags. Carriers can tilt and catch on internal metal seams. That compounds the problem.

Guy at Maglula got back to me. Feisty email conversation. Seems to be in denial so I sent pictures.
Note in this one the factory five round mag on the left and the similarity to the ten round Promag mags on the right. Almost identical but no Ruger label. The Promags have the necessary groove and work with the loader. Have not shot them in the gun.

Here is a shot of current production Ruger ten round mags without the necessary groove.
