    Front SIght on1911 flew off

RIA 1911 GI meprolight Narrow Tennon front is what popped off.

Had the sight installed about 2 years ago. And shooting this weekend it decided it was done hanging around with me. Dont know what happened. The gunsmith was recoomended by a friend and ahve picked his brian many times about pother gun projects and he always had the right answeres to help me along. So im not positive it is completly his fault, Possibly did not stake it enough, but he did say he used a bit of epoxy to secure it as well.

What are my options. Im assuming its time for a new slide. My thought was to call Armscor and see if they can sell me a new Tactical slide with sights installed than do the final fitting locally.

    Thoughts?

I would just take the opportunity to get the slide milled for dovetail sights of your choosing.

You could buy another front sight, and have it silver soldered in place. I've done this before, however you will probably need to have the slide refinished. If you're good with a oxy-acetelyne torch, you could do it yourself.

My sig1911 front dove tails sight came loose after 300 rounds. It's very common on 1911's. I was lucky to catch it early and fixed with red loctite. @ 400 rounds, the rear sights started walking off. My friend saw it and we blue loctite it. I try to do an inspections pre shooting and during cleanings all all my toys now.

yaaa... but a new slide would be so nice. If i could get ahold of a oxy kit i could probably do it. Another thought i had was to zap it with my mig.

Oh, also i was not able to find the front sight. It is somewhere on the desert floor.

This happened to me a few years ago. It actually bounced off my forehead. Still have the sight, but figured it was time to change from the tenon design.

I tried to go with some Heinie sights, but they sent it back after a couple months and said they wouldn't do it on a light weight Commander slide. Hmmm....

Went with the low profile Novaks. Got it back in about two weeks and I love it.

Uh... That's very much not a common problem with properly built 1911s.

You probably got a slide with the dovetails cut on the high end of the tolerance spectrum, and sights cut on the narrow end. This is one of the reasons why Kimber uses oversized dovetails on their sights, and then shove them in with a hydraulic press. Annoying to change later, but they ain't moving anywhere until then...

For the OP, I would definitely recommend finding someone to cut a dovetail for a new front sight. I'm not super familiar with the mount for GI sights, but that doesn't look right to me. And what's with all those scratches near the cut?

common or not uncommon.. Google 1911 sights fallen off or loose and you will see you are not alone...

Originally i was planning having him do a dove tail front on it. But he said that there wasn't enough meat on the slide to mill the dovetail in. No idea how true or untrue that is, im not a gunsmith.

I'm going to talk to Armscor tomorrow hopefully and see what they can do. Also going to try that Genuine Novak sight website and see what they think.
