What would you do? (Cleaning up barrel)

In the process of doing a restoration on a model 514 that's beat up. The barrel has some rust on the exterior, and lots of pitting. I don't want to reblue it, what other options do I have as far as just cleaning it up? WD-40 and 0000 steep wool? The bluing isnt in bad shape besides where the bolt slides. Any advice would be great thanks

Yes I did search, without the results I was looking for.

0000 steel wool & gun oil. Rub it in and get all that rust gone. Should not harm the blue finish unless you go crazy with scrubbing.

Wipe it down with a clean rag, then hit it with some good gun oil to help protect the metal.

WD and steel wool will leave you with bright spots.

Wet exterior with Kroil let soak overnight
        and wipe off.

        Nothing more...

Kroil oil is the best just let it sit overnight. Use a clean rag and clean it off
