    Barrel fluting

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows of a shop that does fluting in the greater LA area. I'm looking at fluting a 1911 bull barrel. Thanks

i wouldn't do it. the barrel is supposed to be a snug fit in the bushing and by removing metal i would think the bushing would wear out faster. but thats just my thoughts.

Any machine shop with an indexing head should be able to do that for you. They just need to chuck it up by the muzzle where it should be flat and concentric with the bore already and put a center or guide plug into the breach end. The bbl should be short enough that it doesn't need any more support and they shouldn't flute any deeper than the thinest wall section just for the sake of safety/liability. The barrel is not regulated so they wouldn't be breaking any laws. You just have to convince them of that.

jamesob, it is a bull barrel, there is no bushing

Rust, thanks for the response but I was looking for a gunsmith so I would not have to deal with folks who do not know about tapered bull barrels, know of any gunsmiths who do this?

I don't mean to hi-jack your thread, but I'm curious about the reason for wanting to flute the barrel. The barrel is not seen when it is in battery and during recoil it would barely be visible. So, are you shooting so much that you are worried about heat dissipation? Though I really like the look of fluted barrels on rifles, I’m not sure about the purpose or practicality of having it done to a 1911. Please explain.

          Thanks Bear

            bear93445 ,

No problem. It has nothing to do with heat. It is all about weight. This barrel is compensated and sits in a steel gun. ( used for steel challenge ect...) A standard diameter barrel is used with a cone style compensator which replaces the bushing. It is a relatively light setup. This barrel being a bull barrel uses a compensator which screw directly onto the muzzle portion of the barrel. This is heavy. The extra weight of the fat barrel slows down the unlocking and overall operation of the slide. Lightening the barrel just helps speed things up a bit as does lightening the slide. I hope this helps satisfy your curiosity. I have a guy who has done work for me but he is out of state and being this was not a complex race gun specific task I was hopping to find someone around here.

a suggestion would be to find a grinder, a shop that re-sharpens end mills/drills or does fluting(like a router bit). A cincinnati should be able to do this easily.

As long as you don't need it done yesterday I can have it done for you. We have to move the Mills to a new shop next week but as soon as that is done we can do it. Just email me at firearmtransfers@gmail.com if you can't find someone sooner.

Don't you need to find someone with a permit for "assault weapons" because of the threaded barrel?

Stan Chen of Legacy Custom is a huge fan of fluted barrels on 1911 style pistols. I don't know if he's taking work right now, though.

I don't know anyone in the LA area personally. Though I would take James Madux up on it if your time frame works with his. He helped me get a transfer done that had been somewhat of a nightmare prior to his help, and has a good reputation for quality work.
