    Birdshead Grip Project

I had some really messed up LEO Rem870 butts from a trade that was suppose to go into the dumps... but someone recently posted a birdshead grip project so I wanted to attempt it.

Pic didn't turn out from the before pic... this is after I did the cut aft of the handgrip and sanded/formed the birdshead. Left with the attachment hole.

Formed a redwood dow and wood glued in place.

Just in case the glue is not strong enough, blind pin a smaller dow under the grip.

    Sanded down all the dows.

    Stained...

Don't have a 870 anymore... so have to wait until the weekend to take it to a friend's to get it fitted and drilled for attachment. Will update with a complete pic.

Yeah... I took a small piece of redwood and rounded it out on a belt sander until it'll fit the hole snug. Then lots of glue and tapped it in. After it dry... I just sanded all the extra glue away.

I wasn't sure if the dow could take the pressure once you attempt to attach to the frame... so that's why I drilled & tap the smaller dow in place, the smaller dow cuts across both side...better at holding the bigger dow in place.

umm, don't you have to bolt it to the gun before you glue in the plug?

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Yeah, I still need to drill and counter-sink the attachment hole... but need a 870 to line up the hole. In theory, I can just drill my shaft where my dow is... but since it's a smaller shaft, I need to double check that it's lined up.

Kind of hard... working on a grip with no shotgun to attach it to

I did the same thing I made my birdshead about 4 months before I got my AOW. hardest part was cutting the wood doweling far enough back for the receiver stud to sit in the grip

                  Drilled and Counter-Sink.

Had to make my own screw using a bolt...

The finished grip on my buddy's 870... looks good!!

Well, at least good enough my bud wants to give me $20 to take it off my hands!
