Help removing gsg 1911 thread protector

Hi, I recently jailed a gsg 1911 ca model. I understand that in california threaded barrels are a nono and that the gsg has been welded to comply. I don't wish to break any laws but I want to add a compensator to the pistol. I can pin and weld it to make it ca compliant. What I don't know is how to remove the current thread protector, or if its even possible. Any info would be appreciated. If I am not allowed a compensator I would still like to add an extention, I just love how the thread protectors that prutrude the front.

I've seen one of those... there's no weld marks on the outside and smooth cap over the threaded area, correct? IMHO, I think they just used red thread locker and installed the rounded protector as is... figuring nobody can unthread it with no surface to wrench on.

You can probably treated like a pinned FH... carefully cut the side along the barrel and peel it back like a banana. I would call ATI and just ask them how it's installed to be sure.

Yea its smooth with no visible weld or pin, i figured they might have put some type of solder and heated it inside but wasn't sure. I just like the looks of a the compensator on the 1911 match, I don't need it to actually do anything, just to add second kind of cool.

I bought 2 conversion kits and both have flats to remove that screwed on cap, your gunna be suprized when you get the cap off on how small the threads are lol

Yea, i looked at their website and it looks like you have to buy the thread adapter from them to be able to add anything to the barrel

Would a compensator mess with the recoil? Would you have to change out the recoil springs?

I have now dive up on this project because i dont want to damage the thread protector and possibly the barrel if it is highly soldered together

You might try ordering a spare, threaded barrel from the company.
Or simply buy a 1911 compensator that replaces the barrel bushing.

I have an match bushing in mine so i don't really want to replace it. I might just end up getting another barrel from ati if time and money allows for this. unless some one out there has an extra one just lying around

Anybody have any luck removing the the thread protector on the ca model yet? I tried with a small style strap wrech and I didn't work I think they used more then just lock tite. If anybody has a way to get the thread protector off I would like to know.i ordered a tapered thread protector from zrts for better barrel alignment but can't install it

I wish my dad would let me use his lathe. He dislikes guns and won't let me do any fab work on guns or gun parts in his machine shop. Thanks for the good advice just currently can't access a lathe.

If I was able to access a lathe I would have made my own guide rod and tapered thread protector.

That item will provide zero function for the OP...

Really don't know why you are going though all the trouble for a cosmetic mod, unless that's the end goal... cosmetics.

The end goal is getting the thread protector off the barrel. Whether you put muzzle brake, compensator or just a match thread protector.
